Buying a redtail catfish

Short answer
A fish that is eating, settled, and shown in current photos and video. Juveniles are cheap and everywhere; a good one is worth the extra few dollars.

Before you pay

  • Eating Ask what it eats and when it last ate. A feeding video is better.
  • Settled A fish that just arrived is stressed, and treating or shipping it again too soon can kill it.
  • Current photos From the side and from above, in good light. For morphs, see the eye and the skin.
  • The build Your first tank is the one you use while you build the real one. Plan for the adult tank from day one.

What they cost

Black juveniles run about $22 to $40; platinums about $295 to $1,400 and are usually sold out (US sellers, 2026).
